Mechanical failures took Solberg out of contention

Petter Solberg’s disappointing run on Rally Mexico was a result of two freak mechanical failures that were beyond his control, says Subaru team principal David Richards.

Things had started well for Solberg on an event he counts as one of his favourites. After setting the fastest time at the pre-rally shakedown, he was quickest through the first four split sectors of SS1 before brake failure in the final kilometres meant he had to ease off. Solberg made repairs that allowed him to continue; but without full braking power he was unable to match his earlier pace.

Worse was to come on day two, however, when three-quarters of the way through SS10 his Impreza WRC2007 experienced a serious transmission problem related to the left-hand front drive shaft.

“Petter had a frustrating event, said Richards. “He had two technical failures, neither of which was down to him. His first problem was down to a broken rear brake caliper which is almost unheard of. [Brake suppliers] AP have never seen a mistake on one of their calipers for 25 years like this, but it just happened to be on Petter’s car. Later in the rally we had a transmission problem with Petter’s car which was also unusual - especially with a gearbox that’s so old and so solid. Sadly these two failures put him out of contention.”

Rally drivers rarely believe in luck, but many of its fans do. Solberg's luck in recent seasons has been almost disastrous. The former World Champion has not scored a WRC victory since the 12th round of the 2005 season. Solberg claimed two podium positions in 2007, and he finished the season 69 points off the title. Solberg's fortunes are bound to change, and when they do, one of the sport's quickest drivers will return to dominance.

This is what i call BAD LUCK

Petter Solberg’s hopes of second place on Rally Argentina were dashed halfway though Sunday’s opening stage when total electrical failure brought his Subaru Impreza to a halt.

FLASH NEWS - Solberg stops on SS19
Subaru World Rally Team driver Petter Solberg has stopped on Sunday’s opening stage, the 24km Mina Clavero to Giulio Cesare section.

Solberg, who started the day in second place, has stopped between the 9km and 14km split points.

“I am desperately disappointed for Petter and Phil” said David Richards, Subaru World Rally Team Principal. “Petter is showing such renewed enthusiasm since we’ve got the car more to his liking, and despite this setback I’m feeling increasingly confident for the rest of the season. In Chris’ case, his maturity in these extraordinarily tough conditions has delivered him yet another excellent result.”
