Rally community in mourning after Jimmy Girvan dies in the final round of this year's Hankook MSA Scottish Rally Championship.

Two-time Scottish Rally champion, Jimmy Girvan has been killed on the Colin McRae Forest Stages.

The incident occurred around mid-day on Saturday near the Griffin section of the course, when the 56-year-old's Subaru Impreza WRC car collided with boulders and then crashed into trees.

His co-driver, Mike Ramsay, had to be cut free from the vehicle, but was not seriously injured. He was later taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee and was treated for an arm injury.

The event, the final round in this year's Hankook MSA Scottish Rally Championship was cancelled immediately as a mark of respect.

"He was an extremely popular, well-liked and respected motor sports personality and this tragedy has left fellow competitors and rally fans across Britain shocked at this unexpected loss," said event organizers, Coltness Car Club, in a statement to the press.

"We are deeply saddened and shocked at this tragedy and wish to extend our heartfelt sympathy to Jimmy's wife, family and wide circle of friends.

"Jimmy was an ebullient and popular member of this close-knit sport and was regarded as a superb ambassador for motor sport. We'll all miss him terribly."

Chief Inspector Sandy Bowman, head of road policing in Tayside, added: "Our thoughts are with Jimmy's family, friends and wider motor sport community at this very sad time."

The Colin McRae Forest Stages is held every year in memory of 1995 World Rallychampion, Colin McRae. McRae was killed in a helicopter accident in 2007, along with his five-year-old son, Johnny, and two family friends.
