Hi everyone, good question !!!
Well firstly you have to be wild, crazy and an empty head which works hard while you are driving and most importantly a HEAVY RIGHT FOOT with Super glue on it.... Jokes Apart..
For Rallying you've gotta have brains for sure.
You need to first go through an event as a marshall or be a part of the Service Crew to understand what its all about.
Its totally unlike Racing where you just go round and round the race track as fast as possible.
Here you have to analize the terrain and the corners by your self at times and thats why you need to have brains.
Okay you need a car which is capable enough to go through rugged terrain and not split or spread its legs.. Best option YOUR DADS CAR !!!!!
Find a empty Dirt patch and get a feel of what the car does when on dirt, its very very diff from tarmac and you need to get a feel of how the drift works and to get the tail back in position, braking points and turn in points become totally diff on dirt and the car does have a mind of its own !!

Its most imp to understand the grip levels on the surface you'r driving on and the only way one does that is to keep driving on the limit to get it right.
You need to have a Heavy Wallet as this is a very expensive sport and very unpredictable at the same time.
Practice Pece Notes while you are driving through town or to work or wherever.
Get a co-driver who's not afraid of SPEED(very imp) how knows you and respects your Driving Capabilities at the same time.
And be committed to your driving.

Commitment and Dedication are the key words for any sport.
Verdict:You have to keep driving on dirt and broken surfaces to feel what and how the car responds to it.
And you should try and go into small Dirt track events to get the competetive feel.
SAFE DRIVING YOU ALL... :D
Thanks for the mail tom..[/i]

Here's what Naren has to say:

Rallying today is expensive, for one who wants to do it at a budget, and
also get introduced to the sport ----

The best way is to start is in a gypsy :

1) its not expensive ( means, u are not spending lakhs to leard a sport -
makes sense)

2) helps u and your co-driver to learn and get to speed (pacenoting is
important) ....

3) in that 1st year you meet and get to know people( tuners, organisors,
drivers, etc...)

4) you can prepare your own car ( its easy) and this helps u to learn the
mechanicals stuff.....

5) watch videos to get an idea of how to do it ( drive)....

6) and make sure u have lots of fun.

Cheers !!!

All the best to the new comers...

Regards,

Naren Kumar

Guys!

Here is my two cents worth! Practise is very important and for a newcomer it would be a good thing to get someone in the rally circuit to sit with him and point out the mistakes. Since Jagat and Rahul run rally schools that would be your best bet. Otherwise it is going to generally take you two or more rallies to get the hang of the car, especially on dirt.

Pace notes and co-ordination with the navigator is also very important and if he is around during the practise sessions it would go a long way in building the team!

Cheers,

Umakanth Alva

Guys,

This thread is really informative for a newcomer.
I am taking part in the Rally Star Cup in the Goa Rally.
I have always intended doing a round but the oppurtunity didnt come around, this year tho, I have decieded to go for it even if I had to beg, borrow or steal ( and I did most of that short of stealing ).
My wife will be navigating for me and we both never done a round before, ( tho' I have marshalled a few times in this rally ) so please keep the suggestions and advises coming.

Thanx guys,

Kaiser

Hey come on Niaz. Everbody knows its Annie. And give poor Juggy a break. Old men with walking sticks? You probably don't know that he is fit as a fiddle and will outrun most chaps half his age.

HEy take all of the above tips....
1. enter Juggys or Chetans Rally School as a Press reporter for free.
3. borrow a car do an event

2. compile all of the above tips from previous Rally Masters and combine it with your experiences....and write a book.

Hopefully that would get you enough money to rally to your hearts desire and content until retirement.
