Gill annexes overall title in Rally De Bengal E-mail

Durgapur, Dec 18:

Team MRF's Gaurav Gill (co-driver Musa Sherif) finished the 2011 Indian National Rally Championship season in style, with a resounding win at the Rally de Bengal, the seventh and final round here Sunday. Having clinched the National title with a round to spare, the 30-year-old Delhi-based Gill dashed the hopes of challenger and former team mate Lohitt Urs (PV Srinivasa Murthy) who finished second here.

Urs, driving a Mitsubishi Lancer Cedia (Group N+) prepared by Red Rooster Performance, posted faster times in two stages Sunday but could not make up the overnight one minute deficit. He finished second in the standings.

The second MRF entry Amittrajit Ghosh (Ashwin Naik) could not complete the rally as their car stalled in the transport section.

Rahul Kanthraj (Vivek Y Bhatt) managed to stay on top despite losing times in all the stages Sunday to win the 2000cc (Group N) class and also finish overall third and first in the category ahead of Bangalore youngster Karna Kadur (Somonnita Ghosh). However, a second place was enough for Kadur to clinch the National title.

Local star Azgar Ali (Debasish Ghosh) did well to win the 1600cc class edging out Pune's Aniruddha Rangnekar (Anoop Kumar) to second place. Ranganekar, however, won the national championship in this class.

Team Woodlander had a double bonanza with both their drivers winning their respective classes.

In 1400cc Star Cup, Mangalore teenager Dean Mascarenhas (Shruptha Padival) kept his cool to thwart the challenge of Vikram Aroor (AG Somayya) while Pritul Dey and Mukesh Thakkar finished third.

Mascarenhas and Padival won three of the four rallies they took part this year and were supported by Woodland for the last two rounds.
