Coimbatore, 28 Jun 2009: It was so near yet so far for Team MRF’s Arjun Rao. The 26-year-old from Mangalore, who enjoyed a slight edge at the start, surrendered the lead and the overall title to Red Rooster Racing’s Amittrajit Ghosh in the Speed-Rally of Coimbatore, the National championship opener, at the makeshift Codissia stages here on Sunday.

Ghosh took things a bit cool in the day’s opening stage (SS9) at the Kethanur windmill farm.“ He just followed our advice but he went way too easy than we expected and lost 19 precious seconds,” said seven-time National champion, N. Leelakrishnan, the team’s tuner.

However, Ghosh did not worry much. He knew he had the ability to catch up with Rao. And, he did it in roaring style bringing the car home in 00:11:53s in the second stage (SS10) as against Rao’s 00:12:11s.

It took Rao by surprise as he gifted about 18 seconds at this stage. The Super Special Stage held thereafter was just a formality. Ghosh did not do anything silly. He kept the car on track and brought it nicely home to clinch the overall title much to the delight of his team.

“We pushed hard yesterday. I did not want to repeat that. I kept my cool and controlled the pace. It paid off,” said the 23-year-old from Kolkata, who did have a great outing here last year.

“Now that the pressure is off my shoulder, I want to go out and win every other round that comes my way,” added Ghosh.

Rao was terribly disappointed. “I expected to win this event but missed it narrowly. I will call myself pretty unlucky, but I need to move on. I will take it in a positive manner and concentrate on the races to come.”

Team MRF’s appeal:
Team MRF’s Rao has submitted Intent of Appeal against the decision of the stewards to give Ghosh a 20-second advantage after he checked in late at the last stage (SS8) on Saturday.

“FMSCI has to gear up to the new challenge it faces to promote motor sports. If it allows unfairness the sport will degenerate further,” said Mr. Antony Rodricks, Team MRF’s motor sport Head.
