Bangalore: Aug 10, 2008.
Vikram Mathias won the 2008 K-1000 title with a margin of 1 minute 29 seconds. Following were Red Rooster Racing’s Amittrajit Ghosh and Gaurav Gill of MRF tyres. A second one-two finish for Red Rooster Racing was very satisfying especially as it was achieved in the team’s home town.
“This was the biggest win of my eight year driving career and my first in a K-1000 rally,” Vikram said. “The win would certainly boost the team’s confidence and it would emerge stronger and better for the rest of the rounds of the INRC,” he added.
Reigning National Champion, Gaurav Gill finished way down the order on Day 1 due to mechanical problems in his car causing him a loss of 11 minutes on stage 3. But when all was rectified by his Team MRF, he blitzed up the order from 30th place on Day 1 to 3rd overall by the end of the rally. It must be mentioned that Gaurav was faster than both Vikram and Ghosh on all stages all thru the rally other than the fateful Stage 3.
The 1600cc was lead initially by G.S. Joshi of Team Winspeed. But his car suffered a knuckle failure which put him out of the rally and left Sanket Shanbhag, also of Team Winspeed, to inherit the lead. Sanket went on to win the 1600cc category followed by Chetan Shivram of Team Ideal in second place and Biju Antony in third.
Mazdayar Vatcha of Team Winspeed put on a brilliant show of speed and control at the IMG K 1000 Rally held over the last three days at Bangalore. Driving a Maruti Esteem prepared by Chettinad Sporting, he went on to put in some scorching timings at the end of the rally to win the Group N 1400cc category. While doing so, he eclipsed the 1600cc N+ and 1600 N category cars to finish 4th Overall behind only the much more powerful 2000cc N+ Cedias.
The Gypsy class was won by Sandeep Sharma after Mysore winner,
Sanjay Agarwal flipped out in style. Second was Surendra Babu and third
was Kamljit Virdi.
The RSC class was won by Vikram Devadasan of Chettinad Sporting
who put in a great drive to take victory in this keenly contested
category. Second was Deepak Paul Chinappa and third was Mysore winner
Shailendra Hegde.
